Summer Work Project July-August 2009

Documentation and treatment of a painted wood surface: cleaning surface dirt and grime, removing linseed oil with aqueous gels, removing varnish with solvents, re-varnishing and inpainting. Integrated Pest Management: pest eradication from a carriage using solar bagging. Preventive: Environmental monitoring. Survey and assessment of costume collection for re-housing, writing a project budget.

Pre-Program Conservation Intern                                  October 2007-June 2008

Written and photographic documentation. Textile conservation treatments included: surface cleaning, humidification, re-weaving, dyeing fill material, filling losses, and analytical tests.

Objects conservation treatments included: Hide: surface cleaning, humidification, analytical tests. Beads: surface cleaning, bead stabilization, analytical tests.  Ceramics: Adhesive analysis, cleaning, reattaching fragments, fills, inpainting.

IMLS Conservation Photography Preparator                   October 2005-May 2007

Research and development of the IMLS conservation database.  Examinations using a stereo microscope, writing condition reports, recommendations for housing and treatments, and photographic documentation for over 9,000 photographs.  Preventive: Recorded densotometric, spectrophotometric, and light level measurements in the galleries.

Internship in Objects and Sculpture Conservation       August 2006-March 2007
Treatment of ceramic antiquities: removing fills, mechanically removing adhesive, surface cleaning of dirt and insoluble salts, desalination, consolidation, reattachment of fragments, constructing fills, and inpainting.  Assisted with the treatment of large contemporary sculptures and ceramics.
